From Chart-Topping Hits to Spiritual Journeys: Oliver Anthony’s Bold Departure from Country Music

Country star Oliver Anthony has announced his decision to leave the music industry.

In an extended YouTube video this week, the 32-year-old, born Christopher Anthony Lunsford, reflected on his career and personal beliefs while seated in a quiet, wooded spot alongside his two dogs. Anthony, who skyrocketed to fame a year ago with his hit “Rich Men North of Richmond,” shared his plans for a new path.

“I’ve realized I don’t need Nashville management or even to stay within the music world,” he said. “So, I’m planning to transition my entire focus toward a traveling ministry.” Anthony explained that he feels “our system is broken” and wants to build something more personal and meaningful, “keeping things in the family,” with a nod to his great-grandfather, who was also a traveling minister.

He introduced his vision for what he’s calling the “Real Revival Project” — a grassroots music festival intended to grow into a cultural movement. “I want this to be something that can shift our landscape and change the way we live,” he explained, noting that the project’s first “informal” event is set for Saturday. Anthony aims to create a music experience “outside of Nashville’s grasp,” bringing concerts to small towns often overlooked by big industry players like Live Nation and Ticketmaster.

In each town, Anthony hopes to energize the local economy and highlight its unique character by featuring local musicians, vendors, and culture. “That way, you’re not having to drive hours to some massive amphitheater,” he said, “but enjoying something right in your community.”

Earlier in the video, Anthony also mentioned that his music career has already provided him with enough financial stability, allowing him to pursue this dream without concern. “I don’t need to work another day in my life. I have everything I wanted,” he added.
