The couple first met back in 1988 at a recording studio while Garth was still married to his first wife, Sandy Mahl, his college sweetheart. Although Brooks remained married for 12 years after he first met Yearwood, he once told a friend that he had met his wife that day. Both have mentioned that they felt a connection during their first meeting.
Once both of them became single, things started to change and the romance began. Back in 2002 they were spotted holding hands in public at a memorial service for Harlan Howard, their first “public appearance” as a couple.
